Failed Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass accused challenger Spencer Pratt of “profiting off” the Palisades Fire and, through her spokesman, claimed that his mayoral run was simply a publicity stunt to drive sales of his book, “The Guy You Loved to Hate,” which will be released at the end of the month. Judging by Pratt’s perfect mic-drop video response, Karen’s going to need to take some remedial communications classes to keep up during this campaign.
Here’s how it went down.
It started the day before the anniversary of the fire, when Bass had the gall to tell survivors how to grieve. ABC7’s Josh Haskell, referencing the “They Let Us Burn” protest organized by Spencer and toy industry executive/entrepreneur Jeremy Padawer, asked Bass if “that’s how residents should commemorate the first anniversary of the fires,” and Bass replied:
“I don’t think so. But again, I think there are people who are profiting off this, and that is what I find very despicable. Intentionally putting out misinformation. Intentionally profiting from social media, book deals, etc. I think that’s unfortunate. To me, I hope it’s about healing and moving forward and getting this community back. Every single Palisadian that wants to come back. That should be the focus.”
Who could she be talking about? Such a mystery. I could write an entire article just about those asinine comments, but I’ll focus.
At that time, very few people knew that Pratt was about to announce his candidacy. But the next day, after Pratt announced, Bass’ spokesman Douglas Herman told TMZ:
“It’s no shock that in advance of his imminent book release, a reality TV ‘villain’ who once staged a fake divorce to boost ratings and spent the last summer spewing post-fire misinformation and disinformation to pump up his social media following, would now announce he’s running for Mayor.”
It’s also no shock that, once again, the people who allowed the entire town of Pacific Palisades to be reduced to ash are mocking the victims of that fire and casting their true statements about the cause and origin of the fire and the utter incompetence of city and state government as “misinformation and disinformation” made by people with an ulterior motive.
Classic projection.

Just why does he have a book deal? Pratt enlightened Bass, letting her know that the book deal came because of the fire that burned down his home.
“Okay Karen Bass, you got me. I’m running for Mayor and I have a book coming out, but the only reason I have a book deal is because I’m standing in the rubble of my home, which you let burn to the ground. Two weeks after I lost every possession that my family ever owned, a publisher reached out to me and asked me if I would write a book. I wrote the book because I had nothing and needed to put food on the table for my kids.”
Fathers have an instinct to protect and provide for their family, and Pratt is no different. As part of protecting his family, he dove into what caused their home to burn, and found a massive, corrupt machine running the city and endangering its residents. Sadly, he didn’t find anyone working to fight for the community, and knew it would be up to him. He continued:
“The last year has been an incredibly eye-opening journey, mostly hard and heartbreaking as I waited for someone to stand up for my community. As the year was coming to a close, in the darkness of December, I saw that no one was willing to fight, and that’s when I decided that I needed to run for Mayor, and that I needed to announce this on the anniversary of the worst day of my life.
“Karen Bass wants you to think that I’m running for Mayor because I want to sell more books. Right. Because coming after the machine is notoriously great for people in the entertainment industry.”
While Newsom has a book coming out in a few weeks in anticipation of a presidential run, and two other people connected to the Palisades Fire have books already out, Bass didn’t accuse them of profiting off disaster. One of those authors Bass has no comment about is MSNOW’s Jacob Soboroff, “whose book is a cacophony of political BS disguised as a book about the Palisades Fire. He rewrites the entire history of the fire to slobber over Gavin Newsom,” Pratt says. Soboroff is also the son of Steve Soboroff, whom Bass named “Recovery Czar” shortly after the fires and who was paid $500,000 for a few months’ work. Nobody ever brings up that connection, especially not Bass. Soboroff blames the fire on “climate change” and hurricane-force winds, neither of which had anything to do with the fire or its spread.

And then there’s LAFD Public Information Officer Erik Scott, who was Bass’ propaganda puppet on the issue for the last year, whose self-congratulatory book dropped on the anniversary of the fire. Pratt said, “[Scott] just launched a for-profit book as a city employee making $330,000 a year. No comment on that book, Karen?”

So all these dorks are allowed to write books, rewrite history, but the guy who lost everything due to your incompetence has to just shut up? Not happening, Karen. I have a family to look out for.
How many people would have the fortitude to take on the machine right after they have lost literally everything they have? Not many. That speaks volumes about Pratt’s character, and the fact that Pratt has nothing to lose means he poses an existential threat to the machine. Pratt closes his video by saying:
“Karen Bass can say what she wants all day, but I’m not scared…. I have nothing to lose, and I have nothing to hide, and you can read it all in the book.”
While the Mayor is a nonpartisan office, Pratt has been a registered Republican since 2020. Politico attempted to make a big deal out of this, calling the revelation an “early test” for his campaign. Pratt’s statement on the matter is all that needs to be said:
“I’ve been in the public eye most of my life and there isn’t any dirt you can find on me that hasn’t already been aired. Seems like the only thing people don’t know is my voter registration, so here go: I registered Republican in 2020 and never changed it. And I wasn’t going to change it now just to check a different box. This is a non-partisan race — there will be no D or R next to my name. As Mayor, I will not serve either party. I will work with anyone who wants to help the City. No labels necessary.”
