The Dems’ Schumer Shutdown Kabuki Theater Has Returned With New ‘Demand’ Letter – RedState

Remember when the Democrats threatened to shut down the government… way back in March? They were stalwart in their opposition to working with Republicans to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill – until they weren’t – managing to avoid the Schumer Shutdown. Even Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) voted for the continuing resolution, after some spectacular kabuki theater on the Senate floor, and that stop-gap funds the federal government through Sept. 30.

Well, what do you know…

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) sent a letter to President Trump Saturday to demand a meeting to discuss the expiration of government funding on Sept. 30, which could result in a shutdown.

“We write to demand a meeting in connection with your decision to shut down the federal government because of the Republican desire to continue to gut the healthcare of the American people,” the Democratic leaders wrote in the letter.

Oh, and Schumer and Jeffries want everyone to know just how sore they are about Senate Majority Leader Thune and House Speaker Johnson telling them to pound sand after the Senate rejected the House CR. As I wrote, not only did Sen. Thune (R-NE) flat out say he’s not going to do a backroom deal, but the House GOP sent home members with the direction to only hop back on a plane to D.C. after the Sept. 30 deadline, which has left the Dems in a corner:

Meanwhile, House Republican leaders sent a notice to members, stating that votes previously scheduled for Sept. 29-30 have been canceled, and “not to return to Washington until after the funding deadline expires.”

“If Senate Democrats insist on a Schumer Shutdown of the federal government,” the notice read, “Members should be prepared to return to DC.”

“Notwithstanding the fact that the partisan Republican spending bill has been defeated, the GOP majorities in the House and Senate have skipped town abdicated their responsibility to fund the government,” the Dems cried in their letter.

What’s this all about, you might ask? If you guessed Medicare and Medicaid, you’d be right:

The Democratic leaders have demanded that Republicans address the expiration of Affordable Care Act premium subsidies before the end of October and to restore nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid funding that was cut under the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

Check out the return of kabuki theater in their letter with the far-leftists’ multitude of grievances, that include everything – and the kitchen sink:

“We will not support a dirty spending bill that continues the Republican assault on healthcare, which includes devastating Medicaid and Medicare cuts; skyrocketing premiums, co-pays, and deductibles; the refusal to extend the Affordable Crae Act [sic] tax credits; unprecedented attacks on medical research and the public health system; the suppression of vaccine availability; and the forced closure of hospitals, nursing homes and community-based health clinics nationwide.”

Shutdown Schumer Folds – After Railing Against Trump and DOGE on the Senate Floor

The Democrats have a problem with the truth, and thinking they can claim victory with the tired, old rhetoric about evil Republicans pushing Grandma off the cliff. The truth is that the OBBB didn’t “[include] devastating Medicaid and Medicare cuts” for our seasoned citizens and others in need.

Here’s the real reason Schumer and company “demand” the president meet with them, then push the GOP to compromise:

The law…narrows who is eligible for Medicare enrollment, limiting the criteria to include U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants but excluding other lawfully present immigrants.

That’s just not going to cut it, Chuck.

Of course, we all are familiar with this tactic by Dems. This wasn’t even new in 1980, during the presidential election; then-President Jimmy Carter accused his Republican opponent in the general election, California Gov. Ronald Reagan of “campaigning around this nation against Medicare. Now, we have the opportunity to move towards national health insurance.”

You already know Reagan’s famous retort.

The more things change…
