For 158 years (1789 to 1947), the cabinet department now known as the U.S. Department of Defense was known as the Department of War. Pres. Trump wants to change it back. From the New York Post,
Trump to formally order renaming of Department of Defense to Department of War.
It would take an act of Congress to actually rename the Department, as the Post explains,
The order will instruct Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to propose legislative and executive actions to make “US Department of War” the official name of the DOD.
The episode reminds me of an old Dudley Moore comedy, Crazy People (1990). Moore plays a New York City ad executive who flips out starts telling the truth in advertising.
The new “truth” approach turns out to be a big hit with consumers. My personal favorite: “Volvo, they’re boxy, but they’re good.” Unfortunately for Moore, crtitics didn’t much like the movie itself,
Let’s hope the new Truth can catch on this time around.
