The Illegal Immigration Crisis Strikes Close to Home

Around 3:00 on Sunday morning, a man was found lying on a sidewalk, covered in blood, in a suburban neighborhood within a couple of miles of my house. He had been stabbed fatally. This was the initial press release by the police department:

The investigation rapidly identified a suspect:

Since the perp was thought to be fleeing to Mexico, I don’t think it is a stretch to assume he is an illegal alien. Here he is, obviously a fine, upstanding citizen. Well, not a citizen exactly:

Nice tattoos. I assume they include some gang symbols. This is one of the guys whom Governor Tim Walz describes as just another “neighbor.” Actually, the guy he murdered was a neighbor.

While Medina Rojas appears to have been evil, he wasn’t stupid. He came to a state where he could get a driver’s license, sign up for unlimited free health care at taxpayer expense, and go to college for free, again at taxpayer expense–although I’m guessing he didn’t avail himself of that last benefit. Now he is likely heading back to Mexico, self-deporting the hard way.

This is a story that has unfolded countless times across the country. There is nothing unique about it, except that it took place in a normal suburban neighborhood near my house. The illegal immigration crisis is concentrated, to be sure, in some areas, but it is felt everywhere.
