There’s a lot of hate and vitriol flying around the internet these days, which has only increased since the tragic, senseless assassination of Charlie Kirk. Leftist media pundits have openly pondered whether Kirk deserved his awful fate, while vicious Democrat politicians like Reps. Ilhan Omar (MI) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) are vilifying the man even before his memorial has taken place.
It’s been an ugly thing to watch.
Here’s a different take, however, delivered by legendary singer, actor, and showman Pat Boone, a man who has spent many years in the spotlight (he’s now 91 years young). By the time I came along, he was most famous for being the father of Debby Boone, whose chart-topping 1977 hit “You Light Up My Life” ruled the airwaves.
But he was much more than just dad to a pop star—he sold more than 50 million records in the ’50s and ‘60s, appeared in numerous films, and was known for his folksy, friendly style.
He’s not done yet, and he dropped what I thought was some incredible advice for suspended ABC late-night provocateur Jimmy Kimmel, who has turned the art of insulting millions of Americans into a nightly ritual.
Bring some reality, Mr. Boone:
If the legendary Pat Boone smacks you, you know you’re wrong!

The tweet continues:
“Jimmy….you’re still perfectly free to say anything you want, anywhere you choose, but freedom isn’t free as you’re finding out…there is a responsibility with it and consequence from its’ misuse and that’s why it’s so precious.”
“So shout, shout on! Speak your views publicly in the streets without fear, but don’t expect to be paid millions when you bite the hand that feeds you.”

What was so special about Boone’s monologue is that it wasn’t filled with bitterness—he complimented Kimmel several times and even said, “I love you, buddy” at the end. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t bring the heat, even if it was with a friendly smile.
This is as well said as anything I’ve seen on the subject:
…But gradually, you and Stephen Colbert have increasingly abused your freedom of speech; I don’t know if you’re aware of that.
You thought you could infect the airwaves and consciences of millions of watchers without regard to their differing and actually opposite views and beliefs, while networks and sponsors were paying you millions to entertain, amuse, and help them in their days feeling good.
You’ve chosen to infect and insult the intelligence, strongly held political views and convictions—and increasing instances actual facts—with your very personal freedom to say whatever you want on the public airwaves.
The government isn’t censoring you, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, but the marketplace is. Your toxic ramblings are quite simply turning off the viewers and the precious advertisers. Of course, Boone said it a lot better than I could:

I encourage you to listen to his whole speech. He brings the kind of dignity that so many of our public figures seem to have lost in the modern age.
We need more Pat Boones in this world, and fewer Jimmy Kimmels.
