President Donald Trump is readying the National Guard to deploy in the nation’s capital, according to a new report from Reuters.
That comes after a brutal assault left a top staffer for the Department of Government Efficiency bleeding on a Washington street. Edward Coristine suffered serious injuries while trying to save a woman from being carjacked. The outrage that ensued has driven a series of moves to try to clean up the violent crime problem in D.C.
As RedState reported, the issues have been exacerbated by a left-wing city council that has coddled criminals in the name of “social justice.” That includes a series of initiatives and amendments that have led to assailants not being charged and sent to jail, especially regarding young people. Roving gangs of teenagers assaulting and carjacking people have been an epidemic for well over a decade in the city.
Understandably, Trump is no longer willing to sit by and wait for the local Democrat politicians to stop being Democrats. In response to the Department of Justice’s request to tighten up the laws surrounding criminality, members of the city council scoffed.
Wrong answer, Zachary.
When the administration comes down hard, don’t say you weren’t given a chance. https://t.co/7ZO3gchIbb

Well, we are now at the “coming down hard” portion of this saga. What started with putting more FBI agents on the streets is now escalating to the deployment of the National Guard.

What exactly would these National Guard troops be doing? That’s an open question. They could be used to help protect the aforementioned FBI agents. They could also help with processing and detainment. In other words, they’d operate as a support mechanism to free up law enforcement to do more direct enforcement actions. Most of all, though, I think the point of this would be to offer a deterrent to criminals by simply getting more eyes on more parts of the city.
Is someone more or less likely to commit a carjacking or assault when National Guard members are standing on the adjacent street corner? I think the answer to that is obvious.
Regardless, it should be remembered how we got here. Republicans did not invent or propagate the violent crime problem in the nation’s capital. That’s on the Democrat politicians who have run the city for decades on end. The city council and the mayor had a chance to respond to the administration’s concerns like adults instead of doubling down on their failures, and they chose the latter. That thumbing of the nose may work in other blue cities, but D.C. is a federal city with very unique mechanisms allowing the administration to take real action.
