Three people are dead and another person was injured following a shooting at a Target parking lot in Austin, Texas, on Monday afternoon.
In the initial post on X from the Austin Police Department, authorities said that “Preliminary information – two deceased victims. A suspect has been detained. The scene is still active, and the investigation is ongoing at this time.”

During a press conference, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported a third fatality and provided more information on the tragic afternoon shooting.

“When officers arrived, they were met with those who were shot inside the parking lot of Target,” Davis explained. “The suspect fled the scene, stole a car from the scene. Took that car, wrecked that car, then hijacked another car.”

“He was then found by Austin PD in South Austin, where he was taken into custody after a tasing,” she added. “We have three people that are deceased. This is a very sad day for Austin. It’s a very sad day for us all.”

ABC News reported more on the male suspect who had been taken into custody.

It read:
“The suspect, identified as a 32-year-old male, stole a car from the Target parking lot and fled the scene, police said. The person the suspect hijacked the car from is among those killed.
After leaving the Target area, the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle and proceeded to steal another car from a car dealership, according to police.
Austin Police found the suspect in the southern area of the city after the suspect got out of the car, and another person called police. It is unclear what led to that call, officials said.
At the time of this report, this is all that is known about the shooting, the victims, and the suspect.
