Tragedy as man collapses and dies in front of shoppers | UK | News

A man sadly died after collapsing in front of Christmas shoppers at the market hall in a busy UK city centre. The man is thought to have suffered a fatal cardiac arrest while inside Durham’s Market Hall shortly before 1pm on Saturday, December 15. Staff and customers rushed to help the man and began performing CPR while they waited for an ambulance to arrive, but sadly, despite their best efforts, he died at the scene.

Posting on their social media, the Market Hall confirmed the incident and sent their condolences to the man’s friends and family. The statement said: “Today, we experienced a very sad incident in our Market Hall. A gentleman sadly collapsed, and despite the best efforts of everyone involved, he could not be revived. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

The North East Ambulance Service also confirmed the traffic incident in the city centre. A spokesperson added that two paramedic ambulances, a critical care paramedic, a clinical team leader and a doctor in a rapid response car were all sent to the scene.

Organisers also wanted to thank their staff and the brave customers who stepped in to help perform CPR.

They added: “We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of the public who stepped forward without hesitation to help.

“Customers worked alongside the Durham Markets team, taking turns to perform CPR while waiting for the emergency services to arrive, while others did everything they could to offer dignity and privacy during an extremely distressing situation.

“James, our Market Manager, was unable to take the names of everyone who helped him, but he would like to sincerely thank each and every person who assisted in any way. Your kindness, bravery and compassion did not go unnoticed, and truly reflected the very best of our community.”

The local community also came to show their support to the man’s friend and family and to honour the heroic actions of those who tried to help.

Under the post, one local commented: “This was indeed a very sad situation. Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family and friends. Respect to all the wonderful people who stepped in to help. Our Market staff are a great team.”
