It’s nearly here. Tomorrow is August 1, 2025, the day the Trump administration has set for our trading partners around the world to come to the negotiating table and make reciprocal tariff deals with the United States–otherwise, they could be slammed with massive hikes in levies on their imported goods.
During Thursday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt gave a snapshot of where the completion of that goal stands:
🚨TRADE UPDATE:
“Of our 18 major trading partners, two-thirds of those trading partners have a deal. We’ve sent 17 letters to countries around the world, & the rest of those countries that do not have a deal…will be hearing from this administration by the midnight deadline.” pic.twitter.com/HXq6OxStIj

Leavitt noted that they might see more deals happen before midnight, with both Team Trump and the countries burning up the phone lines between now and then.
One of the nations unlikely to get a hearing from the U.S. in the short tern is Canada, which my colleague Bonchie wrote about on Thursday afternoon falling in with Europeans on saying they will recognize a “Palestinian state” in the fall.
President Trump was quick to condemn their actions, and made sure Canada understood the effect it will have on trade talks. Bonchie wrote:
Trump went further by telling Canada that it had just made a grave mistake regarding any possible trade deal.

It was a whole different story with our other neighbor, Mexico, on Thursday, during a phone call/meeting between the president and other members of the administration and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in which it showed itself a more cooperative partner with the U.S. Pres. Trump shared the news via his Truth Social account:
I have just concluded a telephone conversation with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, which was very successful in that, more and more, we are getting to know and understand each other. The complexities of a Deal with Mexico are somewhat different than other Nations…

He wrote in part that:
We have agreed to extend, for a 90 Day period, the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time, namely, that Mexico will continue to pay a 25% Fentanyl Tariff, 25% Tariff on Cars, and 50% Tariff on Steel, Aluminum, and Copper.
…
We will be talking to Mexico over the next 90 Days with the goal of signing a Trade Deal somewhere within the 90 Day period of time, or longer.
In addition to the the U.S. agreeing to extend talks–and the current 25 percent tariff on products–for another 90 days, Mexico made its own good-faith move, Trump wrote, by agreeing to scrap any non-tariff trade barriers against the United States. The Mexican government also told the administration it will continue to cooperate “on the Border as it relates to all aspects of Security, including Drugs, Drug Distribution, and Illegal Immigration into the United States.”
Also sitting in on the meeting were “Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, United States Trade Representative and Ambassador Jamieson Greer, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, and United States Homeland Security Advisor, Stephen Miller,” Pres. Trump said.
In a Thursday interview, Lutnick laid out in simple terms how the administration is crafting the deals that have already taken place:
President Trump’s deals are boosting the economy in incredible ways:
– Opening new markets to American businesses.
– Revenue streams from tariffs.
– Foreign direct investment.
– Other countries paying for America to invest in national defense in exchange for a reduced… pic.twitter.com/DdjU1QpCeS
