You got the sense this was brewing.
In May, the Trump administration announced it was launching a Title IX investigation into California’s high school sports governing body, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
In late June, the Department of Education announced that its investigation revealed that the state had, in fact, violated the civil rights law provision that prohibits educational institutions that receive federal funding from discriminating on the basis of sex. The ED offered the California Department of Education (CDE) and CIF a proposed resolution to rectify the violation and 10 days to accept same. California, however, decided to thumb its nose at the offer and double down on its discriminatory stance.

Trump Administration Drops Hammer on California for Allowing Boys to Play in Girls’ Sports
Now, the administration has lowered the boom, announcing Wednesday morning that it has filed suit against the state over the violations.
The administration is asking for an injunction on the state’s policy to allow males from competing in females sports – an issue that reached a fever pitch earlier this year when a transgender athlete won multiple events in girls’ track and field competitions.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who spent the early part of this week in South Carolina, for some “mysterious” reason, paid lip service to the concept of “fairness” and expressed reservations about allowing male athletes to compete in girls’ and women’s sports earlier in 2025, but that appears to be all it was. As Education Secretary Linda McMahon noted when announcing the findings of the investigation:
“Although Governor Gavin Newsom admitted months ago it was ‘deeply unfair’ to allow men to compete in women’s sports, both the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) continued as recently as a few weeks ago to allow men to steal female athletes’ well-deserved accolades and to subject them to the indignity of unfair and unsafe competitions.”
BREAKING: DOJ Launches Title IX Investigation Against California’s High School Sports Governing Body
In April, the Trump administration sued the state of Maine for “discriminating against women by failing to protect women in women’s sports” in violation of Title IX. That suit remains pending and in the discovery phase at present.
RedState is attempting to obtain a copy of the administration’s complaint and will add a link to it as soon as it becomes available.
Update – July 9, 10:15 AM Eastern:
Education Secretary Linda McMahon joined Fox News Wednesday morning to discuss the suit:
