UK high street retailer on brink of crashing into administration – 1,000 jobs at risk | UK | News

High street retailer Quiz has announced that it could be entering administration soon, putting as many as 1,000 jobs at risk. The brand currently has 40 shops across the UK, and it is understood that the Quiz has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.

There are also 41 Quiz concessions operating within shops such as New Look. In February last year, Quiz closed 23 stores following a downturn in consumer demand, with disappointing sales over the key Christmas period. Earlier this month, the outlet announced it was considering several options to secure its future following “disappointing” Christmas trading.

A Quiz spokesperson said according to The Telegraph: “We have taken the decision to file a Notice of Intention to provide us the time we need to explore all financing options. In the meantime, [it’s] business as usual.”

The company became the latest in a long line of high street favourites to signal their intent to close stores following the Christmas period.

High street giant Russell & Bromley has recently been acquired by Next after the footwear and handbag retailer fell into administration.

However, the UK retail giant said it would only buy three of the group’s 36 stores as part of the rescue deal.

As a result, the future of its remaining 33 stores and nine concessions is uncertain, putting hundreds of jobs at risk.

Administrators have said they are assessing options for the remaining shops.

The Original Factory Shop has fallen into administration, putting the future of the chain’s 137 stores and 1,180 staff at risk.

The discount retailer, which sells products including clothing and homeware, appointed administrators from Interpath Advisory on Wednesday.

It will continue to trade from its stores across the UK as the insolvency experts assess options in a bid to keep it afloat.

But it has now shut down its online operations, although all online sales made before Wednesday will be delivered as normal.

The business filed its intention to appoint administrators earlier this month alongside fashion accessories brand Claire’s.

Claire’s, which has 1,355 employees in the UK, entered administration on earlier this month.

The two retailers had already undergone restructuring and were bought by investment firm Modella Capital last year.

Modella has become a significant force in the British retail industry, having bought the WH Smith high street chain last year and taking over arts and crafts retailer Hobbycraft in 2024.
