Heavy snowfall and icy conditions up and down Britain have prompted travel chaos. On Wednesday afternoon, drivers in North Yorkshire were forced to abandon their vehicles while the weather conditions worsened. North Yorkshire Police said several cars were “getting stuck” to the road due to the weather conditions, and pleaded with the public to avoid the A171 near Whitby. The A169, they added, was also shut due to heavy snowfall.
Moreover, several villages in the area were cut off by the snowfall, with households being left without power. The icy conditions in Yorkshire follow a day of chilly temperatures in the country, which prompted dozens of schools in Scotland to close for the day. On Thursday, the wintry conditions are likely to continue, with several ice and snow yellow warning in place throughout the morning. A rare amber alert was also issued for parts of Yorkshire and the North East.
