Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff provided a major update on a possible Ukraine peace deal. He said peace talks on ending the war in Ukraine hinge on just one isssue: his imminent meeting with Vladimir Putin. Mr Witkoff spoke in Davos this morning before he flies to Moscow for discussions with the Russian president, saying major progress has been made.
He added: “We’re at the end now… We’re going to get it done.” The US president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will also join the contingent. Putin said he would meet the pair to “continue dialogue on the Ukrainian settlement”, and discuss Mr Trump’s Board of Peace and frozen Russian assets.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Mr Witkoff and Mr Kushner will arrive in Moscow between 4pm and 5pm GMT.
Peskov said: “We would not like to comment on the current stage of the negotiations, especially in the lead-up to Witkoff’s arrival in Moscow and his meeting with Putin.
“It’s clear that the Russian president highly values the peacemaking efforts of President Trump personally and his team, including Special Envoy Witkoff… We welcome these efforts and their effectiveness.”
This comes as Mr Trump also prepares for more peace neogitations with Volodymyr Zelensky after the US president claimed they are “reasonably close” to a deal.
“I believe they’re at a point now where they can come together and get a deal done. And if they don’t, they’re stupid.”
The leaders will meet in the Swiss city at 12pm GMT before Mr Zelensky delivers his keynote speech at 1.30pm. He will also join a panel called International Advisory Council for Ukraine‘s Recovery.
