Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, is still contending with Russia. After a summer in which hopes were running high for a peace deal, Ukraine has faced an autumn including stepped-up Russian attacks.
Now, with a cease-fire in the works between Israel and Hamas, President Zelensky is making some hopeful noises about ending the Russo-Ukrainian War, as well, or at least, gaining some breathing room with a cease-fire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday said President Trump’s ability to successfully broker a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas provides hope for an end to the war in Eastern Europe.
“If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well—including the Russian war,” Zelensky wrote in a statement on the social platform X, after a congratulatory call to Trump.
Zelensky used his official X account to make his thoughts known.
I had a call with US President Donald Trump—a very positive and productive one. I congratulated @POTUS on his success and the Middle East deal he was able to secure, which is an outstanding achievement. The post continues:
If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well—including the Russian war.
I informed President Trump about Russia’s attacks on our energy system—and I appreciate his willingness to support us. We discussed opportunities to bolster our air defense, as well as concrete agreements that we are working on to ensure this. There are good options and solid ideas on how to truly strengthen us.
There needs to be readiness on the Russian side to engage in real diplomacy—this can be achieved through strength. Thank you, Mr. President!
That’s a hopeful note indeed, but there are some significant differences between the two conflicts.

Trump’s Middle East Success Is Clearing the Deck for the Real Fight: China
In the first place, Israel contends largely with non-uniformed irregulars in the form of Hamas terrorists. Ukraine and Russia are at least, for the most part, employing traditional military forces, at least traditional for Eastern Europe. It’s a clash between nations, not a clash between a nation and a horde of vicious barbarians. Russia under Tsar Vladimir I has been behaving badly, but Hamas has committed atrocities on a scale that’s hard for most of us to understand.
Russia under Tsar Vladimir I has one thing in common with Hamas: The Russians are very likely to view a cease-fire as a chance to rest, recruit, re-equip, and plan the next invasion. Even a full-out peace treaty won’t hold them forever. While Hamas is more like a pack of rabid weasels compared to Russia’s traditional bear, in neither case should Ukraine – or Israel – take anything they say at face value.
The biggest dookie in the borscht bowl, though, is Vladimir Putin. He clearly harbors an ambition to rebuild the Soviet Union, if not the Russian Empire of old. That’s a dangerous notion, and he’s likely past the point where any major concession or failure on his part could mean the end of his political career. In Russia, these days, that can mean such a fate as accidentally falling backwards out of a 4th-floor window and landing on some bullets.
As I’ve been saying and writing since October 7th, 2023, there will be no peace in Gaza until Hamas is no longer a factor. And, Ukraine may not ever be secure in its eastern borders until Tsar Vladimir I is, for whatever reason, likewise no longer a factor.
