Voters Now Like DHS | Power Line

Rasmussen documents a complete turnaround in how likely voters view the Department of Homeland Security and its mission. This was the question asked:

Kristi Noem is Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, known as DHS, which is in charge of securing the U.S. border and preventing illegal immigration. How would you rate the job DHS has done in terms of border security under Secretary Noem?

This is how voters responded:

Voters have a much higher opinion of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) now that Kristi Noem is secretary of the department.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 49% of Likely U.S. Voters say DHS is doing a good or excellent job of securing the U.S. border and preventing illegal immigration under Secretary Noem. That’s up from 29% in November 2023, when Alejandro Mayorkas was DHS secretary. Twenty-nine percent (29%) now rate DHS as doing a poor job in terms of border security, down from 45% in November 2023.

Obviously, DHS is now doing a much better job of securing the border than it was during the Biden administration. So why doesn’t it score 100%? Because Democrats generally don’t want the border secured; thus, an improvement in that regard is rated “poor.” Also, there probably are a few conservatives who still aren’t satisfied because Trump’s border policies aren’t strict enough.

But the big picture is clear: voters see the Trump/Noem policies as a vast improvement over the Biden/Mayorkas policies. Also, most of this polling was done before the violent Los Angeles anti-ICE riots and looting began. No doubt the riots and looting would have pushed the Trump administration’s numbers higher.

This is also significant:

Hispanics are most likely to say DHS is doing a good or excellent job in terms of securing the U.S. border and preventing illegal immigration.

What a fail on the part of Democrats! They relied on the assumption that Hispanic voters would favor illegal immigration. But it turned out that of all demographic groups, Hispanic voters are most hostile toward illegal immigration, probably because 1) they immigrated legally, and 2) they largely live in areas that have been degraded by the consequences of no-border policies.

Rasmussen asked about approval of Secretary Kristi Noem:

Forty percent (40%) view Noem favorably, including 24% with a Very Favorable impression. Thirty-five percent (35%) view Noem unfavorably, including 26% with a Very Unfavorable opinion. Another 25% are not sure.

In today’s polarized world, those are good numbers. These ethnic numbers parallel the ones above:

Noem is viewed favorably by 40% of whites, 30% of black voters, 48% of Hispanics and 38% of other minorities.

This is one more data point, among many, confirming that Americans want to have a border, and want our immigration laws to be enforced. Someday, historians will scratch their heads over how such common-sense views came to be seen as “controversial.”
