Facts are a harsh mistress. And nobody seems more incapable of grasping facts than Democrats in general, and New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in particular. In her latest embarrassing slip-up, the climate law she supported, and the Empire States ever-more-onerous taxes are driving all the wealthy people, the people who start and run businesses and provide jobs, out of the state. Now, because of the green policies, utility rates are climbing, meaning that a big chunk of the rest of the residents of New York are looking to the exits as well.
Now Governor Hochul wants to delay full implementation of the lunatic climate laws, hoping that someone will decide to stay put – or that some who have already fled to Florida, Texas or Tennessee might come back. Yeah, good luck with that. As our sister site Hot Air wrote earlier on Saturday:
Kathy Hochul is up for reelection this year, and has a big, big problem: for all the talk about an “affordability” agenda, every single policy the Democrats like to push increases costs, reduces quality of life, and drives people out of Blue states.
And one of the worst problems she faces is skyrocketing energy bills, and the prospect that those prices will rise even more and faster in the next few years as climate deadlines rapidly approach.
🚨BREAKING: Gov. Kathy Hochul is now admitting the “climate” law she championed is HAMMERING New York’s economy and CRUSHING affordability for working families.

Kind of late in the day to be figuring that out now, governor.

It always happens like this, doesn’t it? Democrat politicians, catering to the climate scold wind of the party, promise and deliver on some lunatic “climate” scheme that ends up, predictably, jacking up the costs of energy, with the concomitant raise in prices of, well, everything. Then these same politicians whine that they need more time.
Facts wait for no one, Governor Hochul, as you may have discerned by now.
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday moved to alter and delay the implementation of New York State’s landmark 2019 climate law, which calls for gradually decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by certain deadlines.
Those proposed adjustments include delaying issuing the regulations for enforcing the law — already two years late — until 2030 and amending how certain emissions are measured.
“We need more time,” Ms. Hochul wrote in an editorial that was published on Friday morning in The Empire Report, a news site that covers state politics. “So much has radically changed since the Climate Act was enacted, necessitating common-sense adjustments.”
If there was any common sense involved in any of this, then New York never would have engaged in Democrat-sponsored economic suicide in the first place.
It’s always tempting, in cases such as this, to point and laugh at the voters in general. We shouldn’t. It’s mildly amusing to see a progressively clueless pol like Kathy Hochul be forced to dramatically backtrack, but there are a lot of people in New York who didn’t vote for these stupid policies and yet suffer from them, and not everyone can afford to just pack up and move. Nor should they be required to. Home is home, eh? Plenty of people love their homes, their communities, and their states, and shouldn’t be required to think about packing up and leaving because their politicians are economic illiterates.
It’s sad, what’s happening to the Empire State. But maybe, with all the new price shocks tucked into those utility bills, some of those swing voters we always hear so much about will take a hard look at the Republican candidates in the next go-round.
