A British woman says she felt “violated” after spotting a live-streaming camera hidden inside a toilet at a restaurant in Leicester. She was on a date with her partner at the Giggling Squid in St Martin’s Square between Christmas and new year when she made the shock discovery. Leicestershire Police was notified and an investigation is understood to be ongoing, although no arrests have been made.
The woman said she only spotted the black camera, which had been wrapped in kitchen roll and propped under the toilet seat, as she was leaving the cubicle. “It makes me feel sick,” she told the BBC. “I’ve tried to disassociate myself from it but whoever has done that has won, they have that of me now.”
“It was just there, a small camera, some wires coming off it, and then a battery pack with kitchen roll over it, and my stomach just sank,” she added.
“The thought of someone watching, especially in such a private area, scared me. It’s a really uncomfortable thing to think about, that somebody’s got that now.”
Police confirmed that the camera had been connected to the internet after recovering it for examination.
The woman encouraged others to “look everywhere” before using public toilets to avoid suffering a similar experience.
A police spokesperson said: “Officers attended and the device was recovered for examination. Further inquiries were carried out regarding CCTV in the restaurant and staff were spoken to in order to try and identify the person responsible.
“Advice has also been given about remaining vigilant.”
A spokesperson for Giggling Squid also confirmed that a customer had reported a “suspicious object” to staff on December 30.
“Our staff did the right thing and informed police right away, who now have the item in their possession,” they added. “We are co-operating fully with their inquiries.”
