In the run-up to the national birthday it was a busy enough summer week with a pair of notable court cases coming to an end, the new spending bill wending its way laboriously through Congress, and then the 4th of July weekend becoming a bit muted with the flooding tragedy hitting central Texas.
With so much going on, we could rely on the press behaving in their usual dysfunctional manner, but once again we had a clear winner early on in the week, given that the result was directly tied to faulty journalism and it had many across the media landscape upset and barking about the impacts. So let’s tug on the hip waders and begin trudging through the swamp that is our media complex and determine who took top (bottom) honors this week.
THE CONTENDERS
MSNBC – Ali Velshi and Elie Mystal suggested the recent Supreme Court ruling allows President Trump to murder foreign journalists. After the Diddy split verdict the channel’s legal expert insulted the all-female prosecution team as “legal Barbies.” Eugene Daniels saw the 4th of July as a time to ponder what slave-owning founders would think of blacks hosting a TV news program. (The concept of TV would probably be a bit more consuming to them, we are certain.) The network continues to see ratings fall, dropping around 25 percent from the same second quarter of 2024.
CNN – In a disturbing dose of anti-government activism John Brennan introduced a segment promoting a phone app to expose ICE activity in localities. Desperate to support Dem NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, the network found experts to support his government grocery store proposal – which was later shown to be based on his misreading the city tax policy. Jake Tapper was educated by Mayor Eric Adams on some of the disturbing positions held by Mamdani. After the Texas flooding Juliette Kayyem spent much of her time blaming Trump’s cuts on the National Weather Service – and referred to herself as an expert – despite being shown plenty of evidence defying her position.
New York Times – In a bizarre case of where we are as a nation, the paper felt the need to explain itself for reporting on Zohran Mamdani falsifying a college application by calling himself a black man – it was factually accurate, and they interviewed Mamdani who attested it was accurate. After a piece claiming the reorganization at the FBI is making the country unsafe Deputy Director Dan Bongino delivered a list of statistics showing the polar opposite. In a severe example of redefining a story, the outlet that denied a gang problem in Aurora now slams Democrats for denying the problem.

The Hill – In an amusing dose of obliviousness, an op-ed complained red states were “taking over” public universities. (State-run schools taken over by…states? And just who were they being taken from???) While Trump was having his best weeks ever in office and rising in the polls the outlet tried to claim his failures were driving away people. Despite an uncontested election and those poll numbers, we also were told most Americans fear for democracy. After a string of minority opinions and being shamed by Amy Coney Barrett, the outlet hails Ketanji Brown-Jackson for her “independent streak.” They dutifully reported Biden claiming he was being courted by world leaders and US politicians, but never explored something like the names of those calling.
THE WINNER
CBS NEWS
The big news about the news this week was the settlement that Paramount Global and the network paid out to President Trump over the Kamala Harris interview. Along with the $16 million payout the network also had to agree to new disclosure requirements with any future presidential interviews.
The network of course issued an attempted face-saving statement declaring they were not apologizing, striving to maintain its journalistic credibility.
John Dickerson tried to sound tough and authoritative as he delivered a whiny screed following the settlement.
This news had many in the press expressing outrage, such as Brian Stelter.
Former correspondent Armen Keteyian called this settlement the “nadir for the network” – choosing to ignore the Dan Rather complete fabrication that shamed CBS and led to Rather’s career collapsing.
Their morning show was corrected boldly on the air by Rep. Jen Kiggans about the lies about Medicaid cuts in the latest spending bill.
This piece of hysteria on immigration had a mayor claiming he carries his passport at all times out of fear of being picked up by ICE.
In a piece about DOGE cuts affecting food banks and farmers, meaning people will go hungry, we learn that these were $1 billion in grants tabbed only for the pandemic which were still in place.
Editor’s Note: The mainstream media continues to deflect, gaslight, spin, and lie.
