Yet Another Bernie-Backed Senate Candidate Has a Past That’s Catching Up With Him – RedState

As we’ve reported, the campaign for Maine Democrat Senate candidate Graham Platner got off to a promising start before two things happened: The entrance of Gov. Janet Mills (D) into the race and the discovery of some Reddit posts that included Platner boasting about being a communist and bashing law enforcement officers as “b**tards.”

There was also an unhealthy dose of self-loathing towards rural white Americans and racially insensitive posts about how black people tip, as well as some sexual assault victim-shaming. Adding to all of that was the disturbing revelation that Platner sported a Nazi-themed tattoo on his chest, a tattoo he recently had covered with something else.

Platner’s most prominent supporter, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), has continued to back him through the various controversies, stating that “He went through a dark period” after serving four tours of duty and “has apologized for the stupid remarks, the hurtful remarks that he has made.”

As it turns out, the Senate candidate Sanders is supporting in Michigan also has some statements from his past that are coming back to haunt him:

A deeper dive into the CNN piece details how El-Sayed has deleted a lot more than that:

Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat running for the US Senate in Michigan, has quietly erased thousands of old social media posts — including a dozen tweets that championed the “defund the police” movement, described police as “standing armies,” and urged cities to divert money from law enforcement to social services.

The former Detroit health director deleted his entire X history sometime before launching his Senate campaign in April, a move that highlights how progressive Democrats once aligned with “defund” policies are now distancing themselves from a slogan that remains deeply unpopular with voters.

[…]

El-Sayed’s deleted tweets are still viewable on the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, which archives old webpages and posts, and show his tweets were still on his page as late as 2023.

The article also described remarks El-Sayed made during the 2020 George Floyd riots:

He continued [in July 2020], “When we talk about the question of quote-un-quote ‘defunding the police,’ it’s a question of asking, how do we right-size government away from the racist ideologies that have led us to investing in war material for policing rather than public health for children?”

“Defunding the police is disinvesting in the means of incarcerating someone or killing them on the streets and investing more in the means of educating and empowering and engaging communities,” El-Sayed said in another 2020 local press interview.

There was also this fundraising email he sent on the two-year anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians, an attack he conveniently failed to mention:

We previously reported on El-Sayed’s pro-Hamas propaganda here.

The NRSC calls El-Sayed the “Michigan Mamdani.”

Sanders endorsed the failed 2018 Michigan gubernatorial candidate in April, stating that “We need candidates who will stand up to Trump’s authoritarianism and protect our democratic way of life” and that “It is my strong view that Abdul El-Sayed is the kind of leader who will do just that.”

El-Sayed also has the support of Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D), both of whom have a history of antisemitic statements, actions, and associations.

The other Democrat candidates in the primary so far are Rep. Haley Stevens (MI-11) and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow. On the Republican side, former Rep. Mike Rogers (MI-08), who narrowly lost his 2024 Senate race, has received President Trump’s endorsement.

The primary is set for August 4, 2026.
