Temperance, with downcast eyes, wearing armour and carrying two water pitchers, is one of the four female figures supporting the black marble slab with the effigy of Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury (d.1612), in the Cecil monument, designed by Maximilian Colt, in St Etheldreda’s, Hatfield. One of the many colour photos of more than 40 churches in David Gouldstone’s Churches of Hertfordshire in Amberley Books’ popular series (£15.99 (£14.40); 978-1-3981 1929-1)
