Detained, for now

From the New York Post,

Defiant WHCD shooting suspect Cole Allen charged with trying to assassinate President Trump.

Allen appeared before a (lower-level) magistrate judge today on a criminal complaint (which can be read here). He was ordered detained pending a full detention hearing on Thursday.

The next step will be for the Dept. of Justice to seek a formal indictment by a grand jury, in order to proceed with felony charges against Allen.

Forgive me if I have grown completely cynical about federal district courts in blue locales: DC, Minnesota, southern New York. Will a grand jury hand down an indicatment?

If so, will a district judge dismiss the indictment?

If the indictment stands up, will Allen take the case to trial, counting on.a District of Columbia jury voting to convict?

You will recall that Ronald Reagan’s would-be assassin, John Hinckley, Jr., was acquitted by a DC jury by reason of insanity. And that was back in 1982, when America was still America. Hinckley was eventually released from the mental hospital, now “cured.” Hinckley now lives as a free man.

In this century, expect Allen to walk free out of a courtroom door, sooner rather than later.
