Former Canadian intel officer alerts MPs about tracking technology of imported Chinese cars

OTTAWA (LifeSiteNews) — A former Canadian intelligence officer directly warned Canadian MPs that Chinese cars, notably electric ones, pose a risk to the nation’s electrical grid and are a direct surveillance threat.

According to former Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) officer Neil Bisson, who served for 18 years, “each Chinese-manufactured EV” is an “extraordinary source of valuable data, the potential eyes and ears of the PRC (People’s Republic of China).”

“We are on the verge of importing and dispersing tens of thousands of them across Canada,” Bisson warned in testimony to the House of Commons industry committee on April 16.

The Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney has established cozy relations with China. Indeed, Carney was recently in China, where he said Canada’s relationship with China is more “predictable” than with the U.S. under President Donald Trump.

He also made a deal with China related to Canadian agricultural products such as canola while trying to get tariffs removed. In exchange, Canada agreed to drop massive tariffs on Chinese-made EVs and import thousands of them next year.

LifeSiteNews also reported on an exposé saying that Carney and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are influenced by an “elite network” of foreign actors, including those with ties to China and the World Economic Forum.

Carney’s Chinese EV deal means that 49,000 cars will most likely be sold in Canada soon, although it remains to be seen whether Canadians will buy them over established brands.

Bisson warned that the Chinese EVs are packed with sensors and cameras that will continuously monitor information on not just the car but the drivers and even passengers as well as where the car is located.

He warned that China is known for collecting information from many areas, including through hacking. Bisson also noted that reports from CSIS as well as the Communications Security Establishment show that China is an “enduring and sophisticated threat conducting widespread cyber espionage and influence operations against government, academia, private industry, and civil society to advance its strategic, military, and political goals.”

Bisson also warned that Canada’s electrical grid could be at risk when EVs are charging.

“Any system that is connected to critical infrastructure and capable of external communication introduces potential avenues of exploitation, including data collection, system access, or disruption,” he told MPs.

“Once access is established, it becomes difficult to detect and even harder to reverse.”

Bisson is not the only one who has warned MPs about the potential danger of Chinese EVs.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, former Canadian senior government official Margaret McCuaig-Johnston warned Canadian MPs that individuals who buy Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) and are critical of Communist China could be at risk.

Most modern cars, notably EVs, have multiple cameras and microphones to log and track GPS data. The cars also have software that can be remotely updated or turned off.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has brushed off concerns about Chinese-made EVs, claiming they would meet Canadian standards.

China has a long history of going after Canadian MPs, academics, political parties, and local ethnic and spiritual groups who are critical of the country.

China has been accused of direct election meddling in Canada, as reported by LifeSiteNews.

Regarding the CCP’s relationship with Canada, the final report from the Foreign Interference Commission concluded that operatives from China may have had a hand in helping to elect a handful of MPs in both the 2019 and 2021 Canadian federal elections. It also concluded that China was the primary foreign interference threat to Canada.
