From Politico,
Trump signs DHS legislation, ending record-breaking shutdown.
Record-breaking? Politico reports,
After more than 10 weeks, the president’s signature restores funding to the Coast Guard, TSA, Secret Service, FEMA and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, along with other sub-agencies that don’t touch immigration enforcement.
What about those sub-agencies that do touch immigration enforcement? The Hill newspaper reports,
ICE and border enforcement, though, still remain unfunded. Republicans are seeking to fund those for three years through a special process known as reconciliation, which would allow Republicans to bypass a filibuster in the Senate.
What happens in the meantime?
Leaders did not attempt to include a technical correction that Johnson and hardline Republicans said they wanted for a section stipulating $0 for border security and immigration enforcement.
You read that correctly, The bill signed by the President today eliminates all funding for ICE and BP, down to $0.
Democrats “won” the DHS shutdown in that they got Republicans to go along with defunding the police.
So now what? I guess everyone will go along with pretending this didn’t happen until and if Congress can pass another bill that restores funding to ICE and BP.
What it everyone doesn’t go along? All it will take is one illegal alien plaintiff and one liberal judge to order the shutdown of ICE, BP, the immediate release of all detainees, and the immediate opening of all border crossings.
$0 means zero. No other interpretation is possible.
